editorial overview

One word that has been overused to the point that its meaning has become almost completely corrupted is "tactical." What exactly is it that makes a rifle, pistol, shotgun or even a magazine pouch tactical? Is it black? Does it have a camouflage pattern? Or is it just a catchy buzzword designed to sell the product?

In truth, tactics (and an overall strategy for that matter) really has nothing to do with an inanimate object. Tactics are dependent on the ability and brains of the person using the equipment. This is true whether it be a Spec Ops operator with the latest Model 2003 Super Wizz-Bang Sniper Rifle, or a hundred-year old Enfield bolt-action in the hands of a competent shooter. In short, tactics has to do with the gray matter between one's ears-not what he is carrying.

One example of a "tactical" rifle is the time-honored lever-action. Thought of by many as being relegated to cowboy action shooting or possibly hunting, Ashley Emerson recently took a "thutty-thutty" to Thunder Ranch for that school's highly-acclaimed Urban Rifle Course. In Ashley's hands, the lever-action suddenly became "tactical"-not because of what it was, but rather because who was using it and to what purpose.

The above is but one example of the Real World look at equipment you'll find in the November issue. Packed with information, November contains half a dozen firearm evaluations, a side-by-side comparison of ten different "sniper" scopes, gear evaluations and much, much more.

Remembering Korea: Weapons Of The "Forgotten War"
In this historical-type article, the author takes a close look at the small arms used by American Servicemen during the Korean "conflict." Also included is an interview with a highly decorated Marine who served in both Korea and Vietnam for his personal opinions on the weapons used in Korea.
by Clint Smith

Custom Sniper-Rifle Building 101
From choosing a gunsmith and the right parts to the final performance, the author guides the reader through the process of how to build the "perfect" rifle to suit his or her needs.
by Steve Malloy

Two New Combat Shotguns From Fabarm & H&K
The basic "combat" shotgun has remained unchanged for years. Two shotguns from FABARM, distributed in the U.S. by Heckler & Koch, are excellent examples of the next generation of fighting shotguns.
by Leroy Thompson

Kahr Arms Upgrades The Auto-Ordnance 1911
For years Auto-Ordnance pistols have had less than a sterling reputation among savvy gun owners. Recently acquired by Kahr Arms, the new 1911s are worth taking a second look at -either for those who want a plain Jane GI version, or as a platform to build a custom pistol.

Not So Urban Rifle: Thunder Ranch With A Twist
You might be a redneck if… The author attended Thunder Ranch's highly-acclaimed Urban Rifle course with a Marlin .30-30 rifle. Was he able to keep up with the black "tactical" rifles? The results might just surprise you!
by Ashley C. Emerson

The Dump Pouch
Contrary to what some manufacturers seem to believe, a box magazine for a semiautomatic weapon is not an accessory-it is essential for the weapon to function as designed. So what do you do with an expended magazine that will need to be reloaded later? After pondering "the question" the author believes the dump pouch may be "the answer."
by Patrick A. Rogers

Six Days In Campeche
The reader can almost feel the humidity and smell the perspiration as the author takes us along on a trip south of the border. The mission? To instruct Mexican Federal Officers and Marines in the fine art of sniping and jungle operations.
by Max F. Joseph

Sniper Scopes II: A Side-By-Side Comparison
There is plethora of optics available for use on precision rifles and if you are like many others, the choice of which one to choose can be mind-boggling. In a much-requested follow-up to an initial article on sniper scopes, the author evaluates ten of the most popular models currently available. An at-a-glance reference chart is included.
by Steve Malloy

Rock River's M-4 Tactical Carbine: For Close Encounters Of The Worst Kind
Not content to simply write an evaluation of the Rock River M-4, the author took it with him to an intensive, two-day Carbine Team Tactics class. Find out how this carbine performed under real-life conditions!
by Steve Moses

Taurus' New Tracker: Blazing Fresh Trails
Out in the West the term "tracker" is reserved for a very special breed of .individual. Does the new Taurus .45 ACP revolver live up to this esteemed title? The author believes that this moon-clip-fed revolver has great potential for either self-defense or simply as a companion on the trail.
by Denny Hansen

Newcon Optik's 1500 Meter Laser Rangefinder
While many laser rangefinders will work under ideal circumstances, not all will work reliably under harsh field conditions. The author believes the Newcon Optik is one that will go the "distance."
